Theranos said it could run hundreds of blood tests from one drop. The machine never worked yet they sold it anyway again and again.

Some lessons I’ve learned so far:

  1. Over-promising is a trap: Once you promise a result you cannot deliver, every sale turns into a lie you have to cover. The gap between the pitch and the real product keeps growing until it breaks.
  2. Culture decides what leaders hear: At Theranos, fear kept people quiet. Anyone who raised a problem was fired or pushed out, secrecy was rewarded and honesty was punished, so bad news never reached the top.
